Snæfellsnes Peninsula
The Snæfellsnes peninsula is often referred to as “Iceland In Miniature.” Why? Well, a one-day road trip grants you access to essentially every notorious Icelandic topography in one spot, including a sub-glacial volcano, ancient lava fields, geothermal hot springs, black sand beaches, waterfalls, canyons, and, of course, the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Follow Route 54 to circle around the area, but make sure to check out Stykkishólmur—it’s a gem of a coastal fishing village. You can easily make it there and back again from Reykjavík in twelve hours.

About this tour
Set out on a spectacular journey across the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” for its rich variety of landscapes. Begin with a stop at Berserkjahraun, a vast and ancient lava field shaped by volcanic eruptions and Viking legends. As your guide recounts the tale of the berserkers who gave the area its name, take in the rugged terrain, still wild and hauntingly beautiful. From there, continue to Kirkjufell, Iceland’s most photographed mountain. With its perfectly symmetrical shape and the nearby cascading waterfalls, it’s a dream setting for photography and storytelling alike.
Next, head to the remote southern coastline for a walk to the Malariff lighthouse, standing tall against crashing Atlantic waves and endless lava plains. Then, venture underground into Vatnshellir Cave, a surreal lava tube formed over 8,000 years ago. Equipped with a helmet and flashlight, descend into the earth to explore the vivid colors and strange formations left behind by volcanic forces. Above ground, stop at Arnarstapi, a picturesque coastal village known for its dramatic basalt cliffs, sea arches, and bustling birdlife—a perfect place for a refreshing seaside walk.
The tour concludes with a visit to Ytri-Tunga, a rare golden-sand beach and one of the best spots in Iceland for seal watching. Watch these curious marine mammals as they rest on the rocks or play in the surf, framed by distant mountains and rolling waves. This tour offers a stunning mix of Iceland’s natural beauty—above and below ground, wild and serene—wrapped in folklore, geology, and coastal wonder.
