The Icelandic Road Administration (Vegagerðin) grades every serviced road in the country through the day. This is that map, in English: what is clear, what is slippery and what is closed, refreshed every five minutes. The official source stays umferdin.is; check it again before you set off, or call 1777 for road information.

What the terms mean

Vegagerðin's crews grade the roads and update the map from 07:00 to 22:00 between 1 October and 30 April, and from 08:00 to 16:00 the rest of the year. The wording below follows their own definitions.

Clear
Vegagerðin calls it 'easily passable': at least one wheel track in each lane free of ice, and too little snow elsewhere to matter.
Icy patches
Ice or packed snow on up to a fifth of the stretch, usually bridges and shaded bends.
Slippery
Hard ice or packed snow on more than a fifth of the stretch.
Extremely slippery
Sheet ice, or wet ice and wet packed snow, on more than a fifth of the stretch. Stay off it if you can.
Snow or slush
Up to 10 cm of wet or loose snow on the road.
Difficult driving
10 to 20 cm of loose snow or small drifts; unsafe for anything but a four-wheel drive.
Difficult road conditions
More than 20 cm of snow or drifts; unsafe for anything but large SUVs, off-road and bigger vehicles.
Impassable
Snow, a landslide or a flood has made it impassable for normal vehicles. Highland roads are set to this after the first autumn snowfall and stay there until spring. Do not attempt it.
Closed
Closed by the Road Administration.

Before you drive

Iceland closes roads fast in a storm, and reopens them just as fast. Check the road and the weather together: yellow, orange and red warnings are at vedur.is, and safetravel.is lists the closures that matter to visitors. Highland F-roads open in June or July when Vegagerðin says so, not when the snow looks gone. In an emergency, call 112.
