Þórsmörk
This tucked away valley is blocked to normal cars by the Krossá river, meaning it’s determined hikers who bus or jeep their way there. The mountains are purple and blue, there are hiking trails to suit all abilities, hot pools to soak in, and camping huts to rest beneath the fresh air. “It’s just one of the most beautiful spots on earth,” said the panel. With all kinds of peaks and nooks and crannies, the area is full of natural beauty and folkloric significance, with all kinds of historical landmarks and spiritual tales attached to the trails and region. It has a very special feeling.

Your guide will pick you up from your accommodation or meet you at the Volcano Trails HQ. The guide will be driving one of ISAK´s classic Land Rover Defenders for your 4x4 adventure in Iceland. The Defenders are specially equipped for overland expeditions and will take you to all the best hidden and hard-to-reach places in Þórsmörk valley.
River crossing, 4x4 trail driving, stunning views and beautiful hiking trails, all put together in a day-tour to Þórsmörk.
Þórsmörk valley was named after the Norse god Thor. It‘s situated in the south of Iceland, between the glaciers Tindafjallajokull, Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull, the peak that notoriously erupted in 2010 and caused widespread disruption to air traffic in Europe. Þórsmörk is one of the most popular hiking areas in Iceland. Þórsmörk is famous for having a great variety of natural features. It has been protected since 1921, in the care of the Forestry Service. Weather in Þórsmörk is often warmer than nearby, since it is protected by the three glaciers surrounding it. In the protected valley there is green vegetation of moss, fern and birch wood.
In spite of being warmer, Þórsmörk is also wetter than the rest of the country. This, however, only brightens the vegetation, giving the area a lush, emerald hue.
