Norðurflug Helicopter Tours
Reykjavík sits on a hill with sea and mountains on every side, which makes it hard not to wonder how it looks from above. Norðurflug answers that from the domestic airport on Nauthólsvegur, five minutes' drive from the centre. A helicopter does not ease into the air like a plane; it goes straight up, and the painted rooftops of 101 drop away within seconds. The 40-minute summit tour flies over the city and lands on a nearby mountaintop. The hour-long geothermal flight takes in craters, lava fields and steaming power plants, then sets down beside hot springs on an old volcano. Longer trips add a glacier landing, and another flight covers the Reykjanes eruption sites. Everything is weather dependent. Grapevine's writer left suspecting it could become an expensive habit.
