Mt. Esja
Commanding the view to the north of the city, Mt. Esja takes up the background to every other tourist selfie taken on Reykjavík's northern shoreline. With well-marked trails and abundant traffic year-round of both hikers and energetic and self-loathing trail runners who sometimes will pass you more than once while you stumble up there, most people settle not for the summit, but a big rock at 600 metres above sea level, simply called Steinn, or “Rock.” Or skip the part where your thighs file a formal complaint: a helicopter will put you down on the mountain in minutes, and the trail runners will be too out of breath to judge you.
