Why it's on Icebreaker
Laxnes Horse Farm
Laxnes has been putting beginners on horseback since 1968, when the farm in Mosfellsdalur set out to be Iceland's first proper activity company. It is about 20 minutes northeast of Reykjavík, and they collect you from your hotel. At the farm you get a helmet, boots and as many warm or waterproof layers as the day demands, then a horse matched to your size, nerve and experience. Instruction is brief; the horses know the job. The two-hour Laxnes Special is mostly walking with some trotting, through a valley of mountains and streams, with a river crossing where your horse may stop for a drink whether you are ready or not. There is a pause to stretch your legs, and the farm's saloon sells refreshments afterwards. Minimum age is seven.
