Why it's on Icebreaker

Katla Ice Cave

Katla is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, it sits under the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, and it last went off in 1918. The guides who drive you towards it seem relaxed about this, so you may as well be too. From Vík a super jeep crosses black sand and glacial rivers to Kötlujökull, where you get a helmet and crampons and walk a short way to a dark hole in the ice. Inside, the walls are striped blue and black; each dark band is ash from an old eruption, filed in date order. The cave melts and re-forms every season, so this year's is not last year's. Katlatrack, Troll Expeditions and Southcoast Adventure all start in Vík and take three to four hours.

From the Icebreaker app, curated with The Reykjavík Grapevine.
