Húsafell Canyon Baths
Three stone pools tucked into a canyon above Húsafell, reached with a local guide who drives you up from the Activity Centre and walks you down into the gorge. Urð, the warmest, sits around 41°C; Hringur, ten degrees cooler, is modelled on Snorri Sturluson's own hot tub at Reykholt; a nameless third pool down a flagstone path is the coldest. Everything was built the way it was done in the tenth century, from canyon-floor stone, salvaged telephone-pole timber and goatskins from neighbouring farms, and cliffs close in on every side with waterfalls that freeze solid in winter. No gift shop, no bar and no crowd: bring your own drink and bathe the way the chieftains did. About an hour and three quarters, door to door.
