How much does Iceland cost.

Iceland has a reputation for being brutally expensive. Some of that is true. Some of it is what tourists overspend on because nobody told them the cheap option existed. Here's the honest breakdown of 2026 prices in ISK, with three sample budgets from budget backpacker to full-luxury.

Is Iceland really expensive?

Short answer: yes for restaurants, alcohol, and summer rental cars. No for pools, museums, groceries, and hot water in your hotel. The Icelandic economy runs on tourism, fishing, and aluminium smelting, which means everything imported is expensive (wine, most produce, imported meat) and everything Icelandic is cheaper than you expect (lamb, fish, dairy, geothermal energy, tap water).

If you calibrate expectations correctly, Iceland is roughly Copenhagen or Zurich prices for eating out, and roughly London prices for accommodation. It's not Bali.

Flights to Iceland

Keflavík (KEF) is Iceland's international airport, 45 minutes from Reykjavík. Main carriers: Icelandair, easyJet (from UK), Delta, United, JetBlue (from US East Coast).

  • New York → KEF (return): 55,000–95,000 ISK in winter, 95,000–160,000 ISK in summer.
  • London → KEF (return): 35,000–70,000 ISK winter, 55,000–120,000 ISK summer.
  • Paris/Frankfurt → KEF (return): 40,000–75,000 ISK winter, 65,000–130,000 ISK summer.
  • West Coast US → KEF: 90,000–180,000 ISK.

Icelandair has the most routes and a better luggage allowance; the low-cost carriers are often cheaper if you travel light. Cheapest months to fly: October, November, January, February (excluding Christmas/NYE).

Rental car

You'll probably want one if you plan to leave Reykjavík.

Add fuel: petrol runs about 235–260 ISK/L and diesel about 275–295 ISK/L (September 2026), depending on the chain. See today's fuel prices. A Ring Road drive burns roughly 60,000–90,000 ISK in fuel depending on car. See our F-road safety guide for which vehicle you actually need, a 2WD is illegal on F-roads and voids your insurance if you drive one there.

Food

Grocery shopping saves you the most. Bónus (pink-piggy-on-yellow logo) is the cheapest supermarket by far, locals shop here. Krónan is second-cheapest. Netto, Hagkaup, and 10–11 charge tourist markups; avoid unless you're desperate.

Money-saving tips

  • Refill your water bottle. Icelandic tap water is among the world's cleanest. Skip bottled water, pure waste.
  • Buy alcohol at the airport duty-free on arrival. Vínbúðin (the state monopoly) is expensive; airport is 30–40% cheaper. Bars are eye-wateringly priced.
  • Use happy hours. Most bars run 15:00–20:00 with pints at 800–1,100 ISK. The Icebreaker app shows happy-hour times.
  • Eat at food halls. Hlemmur Mathöll, Grandi Mathöll, decent portions, 3,000–5,000 ISK per plate.
  • Shop at Bónus. A hot dog kit for 4 (bread + sausages + fixings) costs less than one restaurant meal.
  • Skip Blue Lagoon. Sky Lagoon is closer and just as good. Hvammsvík (Best Lagoon 2026) is 45 min north and even better.
  • Rent car in shoulder season. May and September prices are 30–40% below June-August peak.
  • Travel in winter. November + January prices for flights and hotels are 30–50% lower.
  • Use city buses (Strætó) or walk in Reykjavík. Downtown is 20 min end-to-end on foot.
