Blue Lagoon

Everyone will tell you it is touristy and overpriced. Everyone is right. You will probably go anyway, and you will probably enjoy it, and that is the whole story of the Blue Lagoon. It is not a natural hot spring. The water is geothermal seawater from the Svartsengi power station next door, arriving at around 38°C and turned milky blue by silica and salt. People started bathing in the power plant's runoff in the 1970s because it seemed to help their skin. Iceland found its most photographed attraction in an industrial waste pond and then built a spa around it. Book ahead, and not ahead as in this morning. Slots go days out in summer and walk-ups get turned away at the door. Entry includes the silica mask, which everyone wears and nobody looks good in.

Admission fee Children aged between 2 and 11yrs are now charged at 200kr. Minimum age The minimum age for using the Blue Lagoon is two years old. This is because children younger than two are highly sensitive to the water’s elevated mineral content. Floaties Children aged 8 and younger must wear floaties. These are available at the entrance to the lagoon and can be used free of charge. Parental supervision With the depth of water reaching 1.4m/4.7ft., it is imperative that all children using the Blue Lagoon are supervised by a parent or guardian. One adult can accompany a maximum of two children.

For all bookings of day tours, a minimum of 24 hours' notice prior to your scheduled departure is required in order to receive a full refund. If a cancellation is made with less than 24 hours notice, no refund is given.

For all bookings of multi-day and custom private tours, a minimum of 72 hours' notice prior to your scheduled departure is required in order to receive a full refund. If a cancellation is made with less than 72 hours' notice, no refund is given*
