In Skagafjörður, Grapevine writers have stopped the car for herds of horses crossing the road, and six to seven thousand people camped in a field when the national horse show came to Hólar. Hestasport, based in Varmahlíð, is the way in for those without a trailer. The 1.5-hour Viking Ride takes anyone from age six: soft grass paths made for the tölt, a hillside track along the river Svartá and the waterfall Reykjafoss. Experienced riders get three hours fording rivers in the Héraðsvötn delta, or a lesson at the Vindheimamelar show grounds working through all five gaits on two or three horses; these tours include helmet, overalls and coffee. The full-day version pairs a two-hour ride with rafting the West Glacier River, no experience required, with helmet and waterproofs instead.

About this tour

This package includes:

2-hour horse ride into the beautiful surroundings of Varmahlíð, the ideal way to experience the unique Icelandic horse in its native environment. We have horses for both beginners and experienced riders, which makes this ride great fun for everyone.

For half a day you will be heading for a white water rafting adventure. This trip leads you through the scenic gorges of the West Glacier River that can easily be mastered by anyone and gives you the opportunity to experience Iceland from a different perspective.

Usually, the day starts with the riding tour in the morning and in the afternoon, you will go rafting. This tour doesn’t require previous riding or rafting experience and is suitable for everyone. 



What's included

We provide a riding helmet (mandatory) and waterproofs (if needed).

What to bring

Temperatures in the summer can range from freezing to 20° C, so be prepared for all kinds of weather. We recommend a sweater and a windproof jacket as well as gloves. Wear comfortable pants and strong shoes (hiking boots are fine). Please note that we require you to wear a helmet when riding with us, so if you'd like to wear a woolen hat or head band, make sure it's a thin one and fits comfortably under a helmet. 
For the rafting you should wear thermal underwear, warm woolen socks and warm pants and sweater, ideally fleece-, woolen- or thermo material. Try to avoid cotton.
You will be provided with a dry suit, neoprene shoes, a pfd (personal floating device) and helmet. The dry suits can sometimes leak, so your clothes might get wet, but will still keep you warm as long as you don´t wear cotton. Please bring some spare clothes to get changed after the rafting, just in case!
We strongly recommend that you have your own personal insurance when joining a riding tour in Iceland.

Good to know

In case you bring your own riding clothes and boots, they must be disinfected before you arrive. It is prohibited by Icelandic law to bring used riding gear including saddles, bridles, etc. into the country, as well as used leather riding boots, other leather riding wear or riding gloves. Riding clothes, rubber riding boots and any other gear should be machine-washed (min. 40°) or dry-cleaned (chemically cleaned), and disinfected with VirkonS®.

We reserve the right to alter any itinerary in the guests' best interest and for reasons of safety. This will not reduce the quality of our tours!

Cancellation

For all bookings of day tours, a minimum of 24 hours' notice prior to your scheduled departure is required in order to receive a full refund. If a cancellation is made with less than 24 hours notice, no refund is given.

For all bookings of multi-day and custom private tours, a minimum of 72 hours' notice prior to your scheduled departure is required in order to receive a full refund. If a cancellation is made with less than 72 hours' notice, no refund is given*
