Why it's on Icebreaker

Special Tours Whale Watching

Special Tours sails from its ticket office at Geirsgata 11 on Reykjavík's Old Harbour. The Classic whale-watching trip runs all year, two and a half to three and a half hours on Andrea, the company's largest boat, with indoor and outdoor viewing areas and a display of whale bones, baleen and teeth. From June to September the faster Lilja does a shorter Express trip. Out in Faxaflói you may see minke and humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. After dark the same office is the start of Northern Lights by Boat: two to three hours at sea with the city lights behind you, waiting in the warm cafeteria until the guide announces the lights over the speakers. Photos are free, warm overalls come in children's sizes, and a trip without lights earns a free retry. Special Tours is part of the Arctic Adventures group.

From the Icebreaker app, curated with The Reykjavík Grapevine.

About this tour

Seeing the Northern Lights at sea is an amazing experience; sailing away from the coastline of Reykjavík and seeing the auroras on the North-Atlantic with the city lights in the background is something you won't forget!

Our expert guide will help you to search for the lights while telling you all about the science, legends and myths that surround this amazing natural phenomenon. There is a speaker system on board so you are welcome to wait inside our cafeteria enjoying a warm drink or watching our own Northern Lights video. When the guide sees the lights, they will announce it on the speaker system so everyone knows to head outside and look up!

Our friendly crew takes photos on every tour that are available to download in the following days at no extra charge. They are also happy to assist with camera settings to give you the best chance of capturing the auroras.
