Þrír Frakkar
Restaurant in Reykjavík
Grapevine pick

About Þrír Frakkar
Opened in 1989, the year Iceland stopped commercial whaling, and for the next seventeen years the only restaurant in the country serving whale steak, because the founder, Úlfar, had got hold of a few containers of frozen fin whale. Grapevine lists it among the survivors of downtown, the places that outlasted the crash, the boom and every trend in between. Whale is still on the menu, as pepper steak or raw, and so are the things that keep the regulars: plokkfiskur baked with rye bread, cream-stewed smoked cod, and a fish soup. A house on a quiet street below Hallgrímskirkja, dinner only, and unchanged on purpose. Book.
