Vök Baths
A grass-roofed spa half-buried on the shore of Urriðavatn, five kilometres northwest of Egilsstaðir. Vök is the word for the holes that stay open in lake ice all winter, which is how locals found the hot springs under the lake, and the water is clean enough to drink: the only certified drinkable hot-spring water in the country. Two floating pools reach out into the lake, so you can lie in 40°C water with a hand trailing in the 5°C lake, and the cold plunge is one step off the edge. At the infusion bar you brew your own tisane from birch, thyme and chamomile grown organically at Vallanes across the water, and the bistro cooks with the same producers. Grapevine's standing advice for the east: do Stuðlagil in the morning and drive the hour here for the luxury afterwards.

About this tour
Hot water springs at lake Urriðavatn, in Eastern Iceland
Vök Baths is a new destination opened in summer 2019 by lake Urriðavatn, just northwest from Egilsstaðir, in Eastern Iceland. The water at Vök streams from hot springs deep under the lake. Years ago, during the long arctic winters, the locals noticed that the lake ice always melted in the same place. Our name, Vök, is the Icelandic word for these melted ice holes. Today, these hot springs supply all of the hot water for the surrounding area.
The hot spring water is so clean you can drink it, making it the only certified drinkable hot spring water in Iceland. Our café-restaurant will serve tisanes, soups, hot dishes and cakes made with organic ingredients from local producers.
Enjoy a day of pampering at a scenic location - Vök Baths in Egilsstadir. Guarantee your spot and avoid long waiting times in ticket lines by pre-booking your admission in advance. There’s plenty to do on a site including thermal pools, floating pools, a pool bar, and a cafe-restaurant. Cold tunnels and sauna will be ready soon.
