Eimverk Distillery
Iceland's first and only whisky distillery, in an industrial unit in Garðabær ten minutes from downtown. Brothers Haraldur and Egill Þorkelsson tested more than 160 recipes for the fun of it before Flóki came right in 2009; the barley grows on the family farm and, being Icelandic, holds so little sugar that they need about half as much again per bottle. Their Vor gin took a double gold in San Francisco in 2014. The 75-minute small-group tour walks through the stillhouse, explains the sheep-dung smoking, and ends in a guided tasting of several Flóki expressions, Vor and Víti brennivín. Grapevine found the young malt "sugary vanilla, with hints of salt and anise" and called the whole thing a bold venture. Tours run by appointment, so book ahead.
