The Grapevine's take
Eldheimar
In 1973 Eldfell buried around 400 homes on Heimaey. Eldheimar is built over one of them — excavated, left precisely as the ash left it, and roofed so you walk the ruin at close range. It is a far stranger and more affecting thing than a room of photographs could ever be. The rest of the museum covers the eruption itself, the overnight evacuation of an entire town by fishing boat, and the seawater operation that saved the harbour. A separate section handles Surtsey, the island that erupted out of the sea just south of here in 1963 and has been left almost entirely alone ever since, so that scientists can watch what happens when life arrives somewhere for the first time.
