Caves of Hella
Nobody knows for sure how old the caves at Ægissíða farm are, which is most of the appeal. They are man-made, dug into soft sandstone by Hella, about 95 km from Reykjavík on Route One, and one theory credits Irish monks who were here before the Norse settlers. Farmers later kept sheep, cows and hay in them; one cave was only found in 1913, when a horse put its foot through a chimney in the field above. Five caves are open, on a guided tour of an hour and ten minutes that starts at Ægissíða 4 and includes a short walk outdoors. Expect carved seats, a cross, faded wall carvings, and guides who stitch it all, tall tales included, into a history that is openly speculative and rather persuasive.
