About Matarkjallarinn
A 160-year-old cellar under Aðalstræti, dim, stone-walled, with a piano played live from Thursday to Saturday. The kitchen cooks Icelandic ingredients in a classic register: pan-fried cod with duck-confit croquettes, lamb loin, scallops with cauliflower and hazelnuts, and a chef's tasting menu that changes with what came in. Grapevine's 2025 review called it a safe, atmospheric first-night choice with consistently sharp service, the sort of place where "you're not dining à la carte so much as navigating a culinary Rubik's Cube". Lunch on weekdays, dinner every night.
