Aurora forecast explained.

The northern lights are a physics event, not a mystical one. Understand three numbers. KP index, cloud cover, and the darkness of your sky, and you'll go from "hoping" to "planning." Here's how the actual Iceland aurora forecast works, from the same data sources locals use.

The three numbers that matter

To see aurora in Iceland you need all three of these at the same time:

  1. Dark sky, no daylight, minimal moon, minimal light pollution.
  2. Solar activity (KP index), a solar wind hitting Earth's magnetic field.
  3. Clear sky, clouds block aurora completely.

Most tourists check KP and stop. That's why they don't see aurora. Cloud cover is often the bigger factor than KP in Iceland.

KP index, what it means

KP is a 0–9 scale that measures how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is from a solar event. Higher KP means aurora is visible further south (toward the equator). Iceland sits directly under the "auroral oval", the ring where aurora most frequently appears, so we need surprisingly little KP.

For comparison: in London or Berlin you need KP 6–7 to see any aurora at all. In Iceland you often see something at KP 2.

Ignore the "KP scale" as a marketing number. Some tour operators advertise "we go out at KP 5+ only", that's them keeping their photography reputation high, not you being unable to see aurora at lower numbers. If it's KP 3 with clear skies, go outside.

Cloud cover, the underrated factor

Aurora happens roughly 80–500 km above the Earth (green auroras concentrate around 100–150 km; the higher red features stretch up to 500 km). Clouds are 1–10 km up. Clouds block aurora completely, even a light overcast layer will hide the brightest display.

This is why the Icelandic aurora forecast at vedur.is/aurora-forecast shows two things: KP and a cloud-cover map. On any given night, part of Iceland might be under clouds and part might be clear. Your job is to be in the clear part.

In practice this means: if Reykjavík is cloudy but the Reykjanes peninsula or Þingvellir is clear, drive there. The Icebreaker app shows the same cloud-cover overlay with your live location marked, so you can see whether it's worth driving 30 minutes.

Dark sky, light pollution and moon

Downtown Reykjavík has moderate light pollution, you can still see bright aurora from Hallgrímskirkja, but faint displays get washed out. Any of these dark spots near Reykjavík are much better:

Moon phase matters too. A full moon acts like a giant streetlight and washes out faint aurora. Check the moon phase before you get excited. New-moon nights are the best possible for photography.

When to look

Peak aurora activity is typically between 22:00 and 02:00 local time, with the strongest window around 23:00–01:00. That said, aurora can happen any time it's dark and KP is high enough, in December aurora often appears by 18:00.

Locals' rule: check the forecast at dinner, then again at 22:00. Go out when the KP prediction meets clear sky. Don't wait for "later", the strongest displays often last only 20–40 minutes.

If the aurora is fast-moving (dancing rays), shorter shutter (2–4 seconds) freezes the shape. Longer shutter (10–15 seconds) smooths it into a glow. Both look good.

Aurora tour or DIY?

If you have a rental car. DIY. You save 12,000–15,000 ISK per person and you control your window. Aurora tours book fixed departure times and often chase across three locations; if your window is 45 minutes, they might miss it.

Take a tour if you don't drive, don't want to. Book operators like Reykjavík Excursions or Grayline offer "money-back if no aurora" guarantees, read the fine print but it's a fair hedge.

Where are the best places to see northern lights near Reykjavík?

Grótta lighthouse (15 min), Þingvellir (45 min), Reykjanes peninsula (40 min), Kirkjufell (2.5h). Any of these beats staying downtown.

Can you see aurora in summer in Iceland?

No. Iceland has near-24-hour daylight late May through mid-August. Aurora season runs roughly 10 September to 5 April, peak visibility September, October, February, March.
